Typical Work Day
A Foreman is a working professional who directly interfaces with the work crews. Assists in the daily supervision of the golf course maintenance operations and in the absence of the Superintendent, he/she will assume temporary management responsibilities. This key position requires solid skills and understanding concerning all aspects of golf course maintenance and properly supervising the crew.
- Must possess thorough knowledge and understanding of all tasks relevant to all subordinate staff.
- Train staff on established procedures and techniques so that staff can properly perform their assigned functions in a safe manner.
- Perform tasks that are necessary to keep maintenance facility and equipment clean organized and safe on a daily basis.
- Fill in to perform all function and routine golf course maintenance activities as directed by Superintendent.
- Must be able to help in irrigations matters, including repairs.
In addition, Foreman are often called upon to complete or assist in all tasks in the course including:
Tasks:
- Maintain our greens in tournament condition daily, reflective of our reputation.
- Supervise and participate when necessary, in mowing greens, tees, fairways, and perform and / or manage periodic maintenance practices such as topdressing, aeration, and vertical mowing.
- Perform and/or manage course setup: change cups, move markers, maintain ropes and signage as needed.
- Manage and/or maintain the details on the course: pick up tree limbs, leaves. Maintain cart paths.
- Assist the Irrigation Techs in maintaining the irrigation system.
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Train manage and/or operate powered equipment such as mowers, tractors, chainsaws, and sod cutters.
- Must be able to substitute as a chemical applicator.
Foreman must have a valid driver license and be able to drive various types of golf carts and utility vehicles in order to complete his above tasks.
Job Requirements:
- Possess good organizational skills
- Must possess logical thinking skills to solve problems
- Ability to carry out and communicate to others detailed written or verbal instructions
- Ability to visually inspect golf course conditions and reports findings
- Fertilize and pesticide applications using sprayers, tractor-drawn fertilizer spreaders, and walking spreaders.
- A post-secondary 2 or 4 year degree in golf course management or related proven ability to manage others and finish tasks
- Self-starter with the ability to follow-through and complete assignments in a timely manner.
- Ability to perform heavy physical labor. May be required to work in an environment that includes such activities as bending, lifting, stooping, kneeling, climbing, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, and grasping for up to 5 hours without sitting. May need to lift up to 50 lbs. frequently.
