Assistant Turf Manager — St. Edward’s University (Austin)

Reports To: RS3 Turf Services Manager

Status: Hourly, Year-round

Summary: The Assistant Turf Manager’s responsibility is to maintain St. Edward’s University’s athletic fields for a safe, playable, and aesthetically pleasing athletics facilities. This includes preparing the baseball, softball, and soccer fields for daily practice during playing seasons, as well as gameday preparation.

Primary Duties:

  • Perform turf cultural practices as needed; mowing, aerating, verticutting, topdressing, edging, etc.
  • Safely operate equipment; mower, three-wheeler, tractor, etc.
  • Irrigation system maintenance and repairs
  • Apply fertilizer

Secondary Duties:

  • Field lining and logo painting
  • Monitor weather patterns
  • Communicate with coaches
  • Divot repair


  • Experience in the sports turf industry and/or an agricultural degree
  • Must enjoy working outside, and using hand tools
  • Must have high attention to detail, strong written and verbal communication skills, and like working in a team environment
  • Must be able to multitask and perform jobs in a timely manner
  • Must have the ability to stand up for multiple hours at a time, and lift 50 lbs. consistently

Assistant Sports Turf Manager — Texas State University

Texas State University is seeking applications for an Assistant Sports Turf Manager (Grounds Maint Worker II). This is a full-time twelve-month, benefits eligible position. Duties include mowing and trimming grounds, maintaining and marking game fields, preparing fields for sport program games and practices, maintaining, servicing and adjusting equipment, maintaining work logs, mileage and equipment manuals and chemical records and performing other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of turf maintenance equipment
  • Knowledge of standard safety practices and procedures related to the turf industry
  • Knowledge of mixing procedures for applying chemicals on athletic fields
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others
  • Ability to read and understand MSDS, equipment manuals, chemical labels and field equipment
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors’ degree in related field
  • Prior work experience in athletics grounds maintenance

Golf Course Superintendent — Brady GC

Brady GC has an opening for the Golf Course Superintendents position.

  • Salary $17.56/hr. but since this is an exempt position that would be $36,524.80/yr.

Under general supervision of the Director, the Golf Course Manager is responsible for the daily operations and maintenance of the Brady Golf Course and Pro shop.  The responsibilities include: turf grass/plant material maintenance programs, property/asset management, personnel management, budget/forecasting, financial management, member relations, scheduling/maintenance or irrigation systems, pesticide applications, related recordings, and compliance of regulatory issues. The Golf Course Manager works to create an environment where staff is involved and enthusiastic, with open communications and respect for themselves, members, guests and the property.


  • Responsible for all phases of Golf Maintenance and Agronomic operations, cost control, and personnel;
  • Oversees operation of the Pro Shop;
  • Directs and participates in the construction and maintenance of the grounds;
  • Designs landscape plans for facility grounds and implements the plan;
  • Administers and enforces all Club rules, regulations and policies for staff;
  • Must be able to work independently and be a self-starting problem solver.


  • Recruits, supervise and schedule multiple part-time employees to staff the pro shop and complete daily maintenance on the golf course. Conducts employee performance evaluations and exercises disciplinary action;
  • Communicate effectively and courteously with the public, staff and other City Departments;
  • Oversees the care and maintenance of the turf, ornamental plants, shrubs, trees and wetlands on the facility grounds;
  • Directs and assists the staff on the planting of new vegetation, the replacement, spraying, pruning and trimming of trees and shrubs, the preparation of soil plant beds for aesthetically pleasing arrangements and tending to high stress areas;
  • Supervises and participates in the application and recording of chemical applications (fertilizers and pesticides) on the Course’s grounds in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations;
  • Provides technical, operational and safety training for employees to ensure that staff is working within OSHA, state and federal guidelines for safe working conditions;
  • Oversees subordinates in proper and safe operation and maintenance of mechanical and power equipment;
  • Develops and executes annual operating budget and plans for maintenance;
  • Maintains records and completes required reporting. Order parts, supplies and equipment as needed;
  • Plans and budgets for additional or replacement capital equipment;
  • Supervises and controls all maintenance expenses associated with Golf Course Operations, including payroll, supplies, chemicals and fertilizers;

An Opportunity for You to Help in Rockport after Hurricane Harvey

Since the devastating hurricane that hit Texas this last August and into September, there have been millions of people affected. None worse than those in the small town of Rockport, Texas. Rockport is a town located North East of Corpus Christi, and was the landfall site of Hurricane Harvey as a category 4 hurricane with winds of 130 mph. Since that day, people have been cleaning up and trying to put their lives back together and find a sense of normalcy. Like those effected in Houston, one thing that has held the community together is the sport of baseball.
Many people call Rockport their second home and none more so than Country Singer Charlie Robison. Charlie has worked and played in Rockport for several years. He wanted to do something to help the youth of Rockport get back their daily lives by cleaning up the baseball fields. He started a fundraiser and has so far collected $59, 292 with matching funds to be awarded later.
This charity was brought to the attention of some TXSTMA members and since then I have been in contact with Charlie. We have scheduled a field cleanup day for January 13, 2018. With the help of Scott Grego of Professional Turf Products LP, we have been contacting businesses and dealers about pitching in and assisting us with our field rebuild. The plan for the day will be to repair one baseball and one softball field for the youth league of the City of Rockport. As you can see from the attached picture, the playing surfaces are fairly well preserved. They only need some minor repair and pre-season care.
My hopes for the day would be aerification, which have been donated by PTP and Air2G2, followed by general pre-season maintenance and some assistance with in-season supplies. So far, we have several companies on board with assisting our cause. Ewing, Harrell’s, Winfield, Helena Chemical, Syngenta, and Bayer have all committed supplies so far. We are working with several others that have said they are willing to help us on that day. PTP will also be supplying a mower for the day along with a field groomer. Scott and I will be presenting this at the TXSTMA yearly meeting next week at the Texas Turfgrass
Associations winter meeting. Our hope is to gain more support from vendors and members so we can have as many people attend as possible. With our help we should be able to help restore a little bit of normalcy to those that have been so greatly affected.
