An Opportunity for You to Help in Rockport after Hurricane Harvey

Since the devastating hurricane that hit Texas this last August and into September, there have been millions of people affected. None worse than those in the small town of Rockport, Texas. Rockport is a town located North East of Corpus Christi, and was the landfall site of Hurricane Harvey as a category 4 hurricane with winds of 130 mph. Since that day, people have been cleaning up and trying to put their lives back together and find a sense of normalcy. Like those effected in Houston, one thing that has held the community together is the sport of baseball.
Many people call Rockport their second home and none more so than Country Singer Charlie Robison. Charlie has worked and played in Rockport for several years. He wanted to do something to help the youth of Rockport get back their daily lives by cleaning up the baseball fields. He started a fundraiser and has so far collected $59, 292 with matching funds to be awarded later.
This charity was brought to the attention of some TXSTMA members and since then I have been in contact with Charlie. We have scheduled a field cleanup day for January 13, 2018. With the help of Scott Grego of Professional Turf Products LP, we have been contacting businesses and dealers about pitching in and assisting us with our field rebuild. The plan for the day will be to repair one baseball and one softball field for the youth league of the City of Rockport. As you can see from the attached picture, the playing surfaces are fairly well preserved. They only need some minor repair and pre-season care.
My hopes for the day would be aerification, which have been donated by PTP and Air2G2, followed by general pre-season maintenance and some assistance with in-season supplies. So far, we have several companies on board with assisting our cause. Ewing, Harrell’s, Winfield, Helena Chemical, Syngenta, and Bayer have all committed supplies so far. We are working with several others that have said they are willing to help us on that day. PTP will also be supplying a mower for the day along with a field groomer. Scott and I will be presenting this at the TXSTMA yearly meeting next week at the Texas Turfgrass
Associations winter meeting. Our hope is to gain more support from vendors and members so we can have as many people attend as possible. With our help we should be able to help restore a little bit of normalcy to those that have been so greatly affected.
