2nd Assistant Superintendent — Champions Golf Club (Houston)

Job Description:

Assist with:

  • Recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, and managing crew of 20-30 employees
  • Fertilizer/pesticide applications and record keeping
  • Irrigation scheduling, troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and management
  • Budgeting, Purchasing, and Payroll

Educational Requirements:

  • Must possess a 2 or 4 year degree or certificate in turf related program

Experience Requirements:

  • Previous golf course experience required
  • Experience with irrigation, fertilizer/pesticide applications is preferred

Special Requirements:

  • Desire to advance within the industry
  • Passion for working outdoors
  • Whatever it takes to get the job done right mentality


Champions is scheduled to renovate greens and bunkers in 2018 and host the US Women’s Open in 2020. This is an opportunity to gain extremely valuable construction and tournament experience.

Founded by Jack Burke, Jr. and the late Jimmy Demaret in 1957, Champions Golf Club is one of the most historic, classic golf courses in Texas. From its origin, Champions has consistently carved its place in golf history hosting the 1967 Ryder Cup Matches, 1969 US Open, 1993 US Amateur, several PGA Tour Championships as well as numerous other professional and amateur golf tournaments. The Cypress Creek course was designed by Ralph Plummer and opened for play in 1957. With thousands of trees, wide fairways, and enormous greens it remains a true test of golf suited for some of the best players in the world. The Jack Rabbit Course was originally designed by George Fazio in 1964 and completely renovated by Tom Fazio in 2002. Both courses are very unique in design and provide a spectacular playing experience in Northwest Houston. With over 300 single digit handicappers, Champions is known around the world as a “Players Club” with an expectation for championship conditions every day.

The 2nd assistant will be an integral member of the golf course maintenance team and work closely with the Golf Course Superintendent and Assistant Superintendents on a daily basis.

Assistant Sports Field Manager — Texas State University

Texas State University is seeking applications for an Assistant Sports Turf Manager (Field Maintenance Technician). This is a full-time twelve-month, benefits eligible position. Duties include mowing and trimming grounds, maintaining and marking game fields, preparing fields for sport program games and practices, maintaining, servicing and adjusting equipment, maintaining work logs, mileage and equipment manuals and chemical records and performing other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of turf maintenance equipment
  • Knowledge of standard safety practices and procedures related to the turf industry
  • Knowledge of mixing procedures for applying chemicals on athletic fields
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others
  • Ability to read and understand MSDS, equipment manuals, chemical labels and field equipment
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors’ degree in related field
  • Prior work experience in athletics grounds maintenance
