Assistant Golf Course Superintendent — Comanche Trace (Kerrville)

Essential job functions:

  • Assist the Golf Course Superintendent with maintenance and supervision of the golf course performing such duties as irrigation scheduling and inspection, chemical applications, course setup, and routine supervision.
  • Assist Golf Course Superintendent with supervision of crew to maintain all areas in the HOA and common areas that are maintained by Comanche Trace.
  • Work with the staff on all new construction projects and future development
  • Instructs equipment operators on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment, supervises pesticide applications and/or operates and calibrates pesticide application equipment
  • Assists in personnel management and evaluation, employee safety, and personnel discipline
  • Assure that tools and equipment are property maintained and kept in proper working condition
  • In absence of the Golf Course Superintendent, coordinates maintenance and construction activities to assure continued smooth operation of the golf course.
  • Perform other job related duties as directed by Golf Course Superintendent.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to frequently sit, stand, bend, kneel, walk and crouch.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., and to lift overhead and push/pull, move lighter objects
  • The employee can be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, outside weather conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to wildlife such as snakes, coyotes, scorpions, spiders, bees and hornets.

Requirements:

  • Bachelors’ degree, college or university program certificate strongly preferred, 3 years experience in turf grass management, or equivalent combination of years and experience.
  • Current pesticide applicator license
  • Toro Site Pro irrigation control system experience
  • Experience in all phases of golf course management
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Highly organized
  • Must be able to operate trucks and motorized equipment necessary for golf course maintenance and have the ability to work independently.
  • Requires ability to frequently lift/move up to 50 lbs.
  • Working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course greens, tees, fairways, the maintenance practices for golf course turf, the planting, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs and trees, the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners, herbicides and pest control methods and materials, drainage control methods, and irrigation system, including wells, pumps and automatic controls.
  • Ability to schedule and supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization of works and equipment and to prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Knowledge of soils and turf
  • Knowledge of fertilizers and chemicals used in golf course maintenance

Irrigation Technician — Lakeside Country Club (Houston)

Founded in 1951, Lakeside Country Club is a premier private member owned country club in the West Houston area. Members and guests alike enjoy the wide array of traditionally elegant facilities which include the main clubhouse, swimming and lap pools, tennis and fitness facility, 18 hole golf course, 5 hole par three course and teaching center.
The Irrigation Technician will be responsible for monitoring the daily operation, maintenance and repairs to the irrigation system on the course as well as smaller systems located throughout the campus. This position will assure a high standard of professionalism in daily interaction with management, members, coworkers, and vendors. The candidate must be able to adapt to changes dependent upon weather and seasonal workload by filling in with other green and grounds personnel as assigned by the supervisor.
Description of essential skills and traits:
• Good oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work independently, stay on task and prioritize repairs and daily duties depending on schedules and expectations
• Ability to perform under pressure
• Extensive knowledge of irrigation systems, controllers, valves, heads, etc
• Ability to troubleshoot irrigation malfunctions
• Ability to program clocks
• Knowledge of irrigation design and ability to read irrigation plans and as builts
• Ability to identify and repair electrical problems and familiarity with low voltage irrigation wiring
• Ability to repair pipe breaks and irrigation head issues
• Ability to operate motorized irrigation equipment and tools
• Rapid response to address emergency leaks or malfunctions
Requirements:
• 3 to 5 years of golf course or commercial irrigation experience preferred
• Irrigation Technician License or Certification preferred but not required
• Experience with Toro Lynx system a plus
• Must be open to work some weekends and holidays
• Must be able to stay late on occasion as needed
• Must have a valid driver license
• Ability to lift 50 pounds, reach, bend, stoop and able to work on feet for at least 8 hours per day
• Ability to withstand working in extreme seasonal temperatures

Head Golf Course Mechanic — The Club at Carlton Woods (The Woodlands)

 

The Club at Carlton Woods is Located just North of Houston in the Woodlands, Texas, and  is only one of two 36 hole facilities in the country that boast both Jack Nicklaus Signature and Tom Fazio Championship golf courses.

Both courses are held to tournament standards on a daily basis and offer an inviting learning experience with separated locations and different turf types as well as irrigation systems. The Nicklaus course has Bermuda throughout with Toro irrigation while the Fazio course has Zoysia throughout with Bermuda greens and Rain Bird Irrigation.

EMPLOYMENT DISCRIPTION:

Under the general supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent, responsible for servicing, maintaining and overhauling a variety of gasoline, diesel and electric powered equipment.  Responsible for performing very difficult and exacting tasks requiring highly skilled and accurate manual operations involving coordinated performance, which must be to close adjustments and dimension limits.  Ability to plan, perform and at times direct work where only general methods of product are available.  Must possess considerable ingenuity, initiative and judgment for correct action.  Responsible for fleet management of machinery and vehicles.  Responsible for determining preventive maintenance schedules and tasks.  Responsible for pricing out equipment and for ordering parts and supplies.  May supervise one or more assigned employees.

  • High school diploma.
  • 3 years prior mechanic work experience.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds
  • Able to stand for extended periods of time
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Dismantle, repair, construct and maintain machinery and equipment with a high degree of skill.
  • Grind, back-lap, face, set and adjust bed-knives and reels to ensure perfect mowing conditions
  • Understand the operation and working parts of internal combustion engines.
  • Regulate, manipulate and control acetylene cutting and welding, electric arc, forge and other equipment with a high degree of skill.
  • Mechanical and preventative maintenance of golf carts and chargers:
  • Mechanical wiring.
  • Brakes and steering.
  • Change oil and filters.
  • Check battery water.
  • Check tires and ball picker.
  • Assist in maintaining proper parts inventory.
  • Proper storage of all chemicals, lubricants, etc.
  • Maintain accurate record keeping of parts replaced, work performed and time spent on each cart.
  • Perform preventative maintenance to ensure carts are mechanically sound.
  • Maintain cart-detailing program.
  • Follow budgeted guidelines in purchasing parts and accessories for golf cart fleet.
  • Maintain company vehicles and driving range equipment with preventative maintenance programs.
  • Comply with company safety policies and procedures to include accurate MSDS information.
  • Continually upgrade knowledge of cart maintenance procedures.
  • Work from oral instructions, blueprints, written specifications and/or sketches.
  • Perform duties with due regard for safety of self and fellow employees while exercising proper care and protection of company property.
  • Assist in morning cart line-up.
  • All other duties assigned.

Summary:

The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for all activities related to the care and maintenance of the golf course, grounds and equipment as well as supervising the manager & crew responsible for all home owners association property maintenance.  Plan and implement budgets.  Hire, train and supervise staff.  Apply agronomic, landscaping and horticultural principles to assure that quality standards are consistently achieved and/or exceeded.  Maintain a safe, productive work environment and ensure that market position standards are met and the golf course continually improves.

  • Maintain the golf course in excellent playing condition according to Company standards
  • Supervise course construction projects and all planting and care of turf, plants, shrubs and trees
  • With the Operational Team, develop and propose a yearly maintenance plan as well as budget for the golf course and home owners association property maintenance. Implement the approved maintenance plan and adhere to the budget.
  • Per maintenance specifications, direct and supervise the cultural practices involved in growing various turf grasses including maintenance of greens, fairways, tees. Also responsible for maintenance of bunkers, bodies of water, roughs, trees, ornamental plants, maintenance shop and grounds, cart maintenance, and clubhouse landscape maintenance.
  • Oversee and maintain the operation of the irrigation systems throughout the property including: pump station building, equipment, electrical controllers, wells, vaults, and computer systems.
  • Create a high-performance team of co-workers while maintaining a positive, safe, challenging, enjoyable work environment.
  • Supervise the procurement of supplies and materials and ensure costs remain within budgetary limitations.
  • Conduct monthly safety meeting/training with maintenance staff and record attendance. Complete safety audit to ensure all issues are addressed.
  • Establish and maintain protocol for management and disbursement of course and grounds water supply. Monitor water usage on a weekly basis to ensure budget objectives are maintained.
  • Establish and implement a maintenance program for appropriate equipment, tools, vehicles, etc.
  • Follow sound purchasing procedures utilizing preferred vendors when possible.
  • Maintain accurate records to track labor costs, maintenance expenses, construction activities, equipment repair, OSHA safety activities, and fertilizer, chemical, and pest control practices within county, state and federal guidelines.
  • Ensure all company policies and procedures are followed including compliance with Government regulations.
  • Plan and implement staffing schedules to ensure quality standards are achieved.
  • Supervise and perform equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Participate in weekly Department Head meetings and all golf course related meetings.
  • Supervise and performs irrigation scheduling and repairs.
  • Maintain security of golf course property and buildings.
  • Maintain course character consistent with the guidelines set for world class private facility.
  • Responsible for identifying and implementing approved capital improvements.
  • Promotes and follows all current and future Club and course policies and rules
