The purpose of this position is to prepare and maintain athletic fields and
related facilities for league and tournament play and to work various special
events in a support capacity.
The City of Farmers Branch will conduct ongoing screenings of
applications on a first come, first serve basis. As soon as we
determine to have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may
close quickly and without notice after a three business day
Performs athletic field preparation and maintenance activities, determines
size and layout of various fields, mows, trims, and addresses weed issues to
ensure proper playability. Inspects field lights, scoreboards, and irrigation
systems making needed repairs and/or reporting details to supervisor.
Manicures base paths and infield arcs to provide safe transition areas
between clay and turf, sods damaged areas, and installs/removes soccer
goals as needed. Utilizes a weekly schedule to guide activities on softball,
baseball, soccer, football, and other fields as directed.
Performs grounds maintenance activities utilizing various pieces of light to
heavy equipment to perform routine and indepth
related to athletic fields, common areas, and rightsofway.
Cuts lines in
turf, paints fields, topdresses, fertilizes, overseeds
fields, applies pesticides
as needed, utilizes various pieces of specialized equipment to perform a
variety of tasks, and inspects fields in accordance with a maintenance
program. Conducts safety inspections on all athletic facilities, buildings,
restrooms, and equipment, making repairs and/or reporting details to
supervisor. Provides litter control and cleans restrooms frequently.
Provides support for special events and fulfills and additional duties as
assigned. May require frequent overtime in support of special events and

technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years
of high school or equivalent.
Over one year experience (3 years preferred) directly related athletic field
maintenance is required.
Licenses and Certificates
Valid Class “C” driver’s license with a good driving record and ability to
maintain while employed.
Ability and willingness to work flexible hours, weekends and holidays, as
needed, to support numerous athletic tournaments and special events.

As a condition of passing a six month probationary period, the applicant
must acquire and maintain a valid Class “B” Commercial Driver License
(CDL) within six months of hire; and,
a Class “B” commercial driver’s license within six months of hire;
pesticide applicator license within six months of
hire. The process includes applying for and successfully passing the
General and Laws and Regulations exam, and the 3A Landscape
Maintenance category exam
Upon successful completion of probation, additional support and
encouragement will be given toward achieving the Certified Professional Turf
Manager (CPTM) certification from the Texas Turfgrass Association.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Work is generally directed by the Athletic Field Specialist II, but requires the
occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or
In the absence of the Athletic Field Specialist II, this position serves as a
working supervisor and leads the Athletic Field Crew. In this position, the
Athletic Field Specialist I may be responsible for daily and/or tournament
operations including communicating clearly with coworkers,
other City staff,
and/or tournament officials. The ability to verbally communicate clearly in
English is essential.
Work requires regular interaction involving exchange and receipt of
information and receives immediate direction. This position normally
performs the duty assignment after receiving detailed instructions as to
methods, procedures, and desired end results with little room for deviation.
The immediate supervisor may, at times, provide close and constant review.
Advanced work requires advanced skills and knowledge in approaches and
systems, which affect the design and implementation of major programs
and/or processes organizationwide.
Independent judgement and decisionmaking
abilities are necessary to apply technical skills effectively.
Intermediate ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, and
dictionaries. Intermediate ability to deal with system of real numbers;
practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and
measurement. Basic ability to write simple sentences containing subject,
verb, and object, and/or a series of numbers, names, and addresses.
Work involves extreme exposure to disagreeable elements; noise and
smoke fumes. Involves continuous outdoor work with frequent exposure to
poor weather conditions; heat, cold, rain, wind, etc. Continuous physical
exertion including frequent lifting of heavy objects weighing 50 lbs. and
requiring heavy muscular effort with resulting fatigue in arms, legs, back,
and/or sensory faculties.

Information: The assistant superintendent reports directly to the golf course superintendent. Under the superintendent’s supervision, the assistant superintendent directs and participates in the maintenance of the golf course tees, greens, fairways, and cart paths; supervises the maintenance; and does related work as required. The assistant superintendent may serve in the superintendent’s capacity during his absence. Must be able to calibrate spreaders and sprayers accurately and working knowledge of sprayer. - The Robert Trent Jones II 18 hole championship golf course opened in 2013. It is owned by the City of Laredo and managed by Landscapes Management Company. The daily fee facility supports 18,000 rounds of golf per year. The greens are Tifdwarf bermudagrass and the tees, fairways, and rough are Princess 77 bermudagrass. The Toro irrigation system is controlled by Links software. The equipment fleet is predominantly John Deere.
- Education. A 2 to 4 year degree in agronomy or turfgrass management is preferred.
- Experience. 2 to 4 years’ experience as a golf course superintendent is required.
Special Knowledge. Knowledge of southwest Texas climate and the ability to communicate in Spanish is preferred.
- Position Details.
The position is a department head level position that reports to the general manager.
Applicants must have knowledge of agronomy and possess sound leadership and communication skills. Must be self-motivated and work hands-on. Attention to detail, quality conditioning, and professionalism are required.
Financial awareness for the position will include annual budget development, monthly expense analysis, variance reporting, and capital expense recommendations. Record keeping, personnel administration, and safety training are required position responsibilities.
Management of all phases of golf course maintenance fall within the requirements of this position. These include staffing, equipment maintenance, irrigation scheduling and maintenance, turfgrass cultural programs, fertilizer and chemical applications, and special projects.
Having an applicators license or obtaining a license within 60 days of hire is a requirement.

The Golf Course Superintendent is entrusted with the maintenance , operation and management of the golf course and clubhouse area. It is their responsibility to supervise the maintenance of the golf course , supervise the maintenance staff , supervise the care of all maintenance equipment and to do all the related work required. Specifically supervises the mowing , irrigation and maintenance of the greens , tees fairways and related areas. Supervise the planting , fertilization and maintenance of all turf. Generally supervise the operation and repair of all equipment. Order all necessary chemicals and supplies within budgetary limitations .Keep records of annual maintenance . Possess a thorough knowledge of construction and maintenance of fairways and greens. Possess a thorough knowledge of turf , plant life , cultivating ,pruning and caring for plants, shrubs and trees. Possess thorough knowledge of the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditions , herbicides and pest control methods and materials. Possess a thorough knowledge of drainage control methods, watering and irrigation systems, including wells, pumps and automatic controls. Ability to plan , assign and direct the work of others. Ability to prepare annual budget estimates. Ability to hire train all golf course maintenance employees .Possess a participating knowledge of the game of golf.
